Ultimately, it&#039;s good to breathe every 3 strokes for many reasons, including balancing out your stroke, swimming more straight, etc., but when  you are learning I do emphasize to breathe to your stronger side at first.

I&#039;ve been reading up everything I can on the subject, and have some private coaching booked but that doesn&#039;t start for a few more weeks.

Most people seem to suggest that breathing every 3rd stroke (i.e. alternating sides) is best but your points about breathing one side make a lot of sense to me.  So as a real beginner to swimming would you suggest that I should learn and practise breathing on one side right from the start? (learning to do that on both side though obviously!)
